Evernight Contest #2 — plus, website update, and the winner of Contest #1 is announced

Posted on April 21, 2008

The big winner of Evernight Contest #1 is — Jennifer Marie! She’s already received her Barnes & Noble gift certificate, to spend on all kinds of lovely books. Thanks to absolutely everyone who sent in questions for the FAQ. I have tons of questions to answer now, and a real true Frequently Asked Questions Update will be on the website soon.

But what’s new on the website right now? Check out the brand-new Evernight wallpapers! Download, display, enjoy. Soon we’ll have icons and LJ banners to match. And if you’re a teacher, librarian or somebody else who wants to get a bunch of people together to talk about vampire books, you will also find a downloadable PDF with discussion questions. Let me know what you guys think!

And now, for Evernight Contest #2:

I will soon start work on the fourth book in the Evernight series. As you guys might know from my website, I love to put together a soundtrack to write to — a different one for each book, although a few tunes remain the same. So right now, I’m looking for new music to write to. What songs remind you of your favorite vampire stories? Or are just cool songs, period? I need love songs, hard-driving rock songs, quirky songs, the whole gamut. And who better to ask than you guys?

The contest rules: You enter by suggesting a song or songs, either in comments here on my LJ (please include an e-mail address here if you have no LJ account) or through the Contact Claudia form on my website. Just give me the artist and the title of the song, and I promise to check it out — and I have no doubt some of the songs you suggest will end up on my personal soundtrack.

Because there’s no way you guys can automatically know my taste, or what songs I might already have picked out, I will randomly choose one winner from all the entrants. That winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to either iTunes or Amazon, wherever you prefer to buy your music.

So let me hear it, guys — what songs should I be listening to?

    my suggestions:

“Your Guardian Angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
“Dreamworld” by Rilo Kiley (and really, just about anything else by Rilo Kiley :D)
    “Stolen” by Dashboard Confessional
and the “Calling the World” album by Rooney (I just can’t choose 1 or 2 songs form that album….the entire thing is completely wonderful!)

(the first 3 are all such beautiful songs!)

  2. delordra

    “Rest in Pieces” by Saliva
“Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence

There’s another funny song I’m thinking of, but I can’t remember the title or artist, so it’ll have to wait until tomorrow when I’m home and can look it up. Maybe I’ll think of some more in the meantime.

  3. rheanna27

I’ve been listening to Sheryl Crow’s Soak up the Sun on repeat for the last couple of days — which is possibly the least appropriate vampire song ever.

Better suggestions: Wandering Star by Portishead, and Until My Dying Day by UB40.

  4. rj_anderson

    Oh, the wallpapers are smashing!

And the most vampire-y song I know is “Only the Very Best” by Peter Kingsbery. Gothic melodrama, all the way.

  5. quiet_rebel

I love the wallpapers! Who made them?

I’ll be back with song suggestions! I could give you plenty 🙂

And since I’ve also been curious on these gift giveaways that authors do, where do you get the cool prizes? Are they from out-of-pocket expenses? Publishers?

    • admin

The creative made them, and she also designs and updates the website. She’s super-nifty.

I don’t know about other authors, but this is all out of pocket for me (save for a great Elizabeth Scott ARC she traded me, and possibly some other ARCs in the future that HarperTeen may share).

      • quiet_rebel

Thanks for answering my questions. Well, thanks for these giftaways then!

Here are some song suggestions. Not a complete list since it’s always changing/growing. Sorry for any repeats.

“Red Tape” by Agent Provacatuer (made famous in the Underworld trailers)
        “Cold” by Static-X
“More Human Than Human” by White Zombie
        “Within Me” by Lacuna Coil
“Morphing Through Time” by Enigma (which is my own personal favorite vampire song)
        Anything by Stabbing Westward
        Anything by Celldweller

        • quiet_rebel

Oh! And I almost forgot “Unchained Melody” by The Rightous Brothers! It’s mentioned in a vampire YA “Companions of the Night” and I totally agree with it being a vampire song.

  6. sarah_create

Saint Etienne (British) has lots of good songs.
Lightning strikes twice is great. 🙂
So is Heart Failed in the Back of the Taxi.
My favorite is unavailable–just on 2000 discs or so–“Everything I touch turns to Gold.”
    Wicked soundtrack–Defying Gravity.

    Possum Kingdom – The Toadies
Not really a vampire song, but I used to think of vampires when I heard it.
    Forsaken – David Draiman
Really anything of the Queen of the Damned soundtrack would work, but I love this song.
    Bela Lugosi’s Dead – Bauhaus
No one needs an excuse to listen to this song.
I Want You (She’s So Heavy) – The Beatles
The obsessive nature of the song makes me think of vampires, in an odd way.
Fairmount Hill – The Dropkick Murphys
    Faerys, but oh-so-atmospheric.
    Toccata & Fugue BWV 565 (D Minor) – Bach
One of his most recognizable pieces, for good reason.
    Supervixen – Garbage
I associate nearly-random songs with vampires. This one because of the lyric, “I will be your religion.”
    Apres Moi – Regina Spektor
    Dark and beautiful.
    Danse Macabre – Saint Saens
Best use of a xylophone, evah.
Living Dead Girl – Rob Zombie
    Self-explanatory.
    Swan Lake Opening – Tchaichovsky
    This song invented atmosphere.
This Corrosion – The Sisters of Mercy
Another odd association, but a great song with a wonderful chorus.

  8. marinarusalka

“Strange Face of Love” — Tito and Tarantula
    “Gravity” — The Dresden Dolls
“Post Mortem on Our Love” — The Flash Girls
“Take This Waltz” — Leonard Cohen
“Do You Love Me” — Nick Cave

  9. Anonymous

    Congrates to Jennifer Marie!

Some songs I think about when it comes to vampire romance:

    1. Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
    2. Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis
    3. Good Enough – Evanescence
    4. Chemicals React – Aly & AJ

    A quirky song I love:

    1. Anyone Else But You – Ellen Page / Michael Cera

    One more song I love:

    1. Breathe No More – Evanescence

    *fingers crossed*

    songs–what else?

I guess I have to go with the songs I’ve been listening to the most recently. Um…

    “She’s the Blade” by Sugarcult
“Haunted” by Kelly Clarkson (mostly just the music of that song, not the lyrics)
    “Invisible City” by the Wallflowers
    “Colorblind” by the Counting Crows
    “Drive Away” by Gratitude
    “Salvation” by Pennywise
“Wake Up” by Story of the Year
    “Thanks Bastards” by Mischief Brew
    “Alien” by Pennywise
    “Pain” by Jimmy Eat World
“Revealing Too Much” by The Honorary Title (I’m not sure about this one, it starts kind of light and fluffy, but it builds, getting stronger and louder. I like that)
“Scream” by Zoegirl (I don’t know why, but I associate this one largely with a few books I’ve read about vampires and a couple I’ve read about other mythical creatures)
Basically anything by Pennywise, my favorite album being The Fuse.

I hope that helped. I love doing playlists for my writing, but I can’t really do someone else’s unless I’ve been reading the story, and I haven’t yet gotten to read Evernight

      Re: songs–what else?

also, I’m curious as to how reviewer’s get authors to participate in contests. Such as the reviewer getting a copy of the book to give away. I’m one myself (http://plentyofpaper-reviews.blogspot.com) and haven’t been able to do a contest yet. Do you know anything about that? Just curious.

        Re: songs–what else?

I’m still pretty new at this myself, but so far, the reviewers either were contacted by HarperTeen, found by me or contacted me within the pats couple of months. (I am flat out of ARCs myself right now, besides the prize booty for future contests, but if any more surface I will let you know.) I would suggest checking out the lists for upcoming books that look interesting and going directly to the authors; most writers have more ARCs than I ended up with!

Personally, I love all things Blink 182. There are songs for almost every mood! My personal favorites:

    The Party Song
    What’s My Age Again?
    Go
    Man Overboard

Love those wallpapers! The stone shield one is my current laptop desktop. Heh. That’s confusing.

    It’s gorgeous!

Can we make icons of Evernight visuals? Like the wallpaper or the book cover(s), if they are posted on your site? Or is that a nono?

    • admin

I think the iconnage is fine, although you might want to hold out for to work her magic; we’ll be adding icons eventually.

  13. sunshine_queen

Hm, since I only know vaguely the plot, I feel kind of silly suggesting theme music, but here’s a shot:

La Danse Macabre- Camille Saint Saens is my number one rec because… holy god, nothing says supernatural like this.

Kings of the Wild Frontier- Adam & the Ants
The Second Waltz, conducted by Andre Rieu
    Queen Bee- Barbra Streisand
All I Want is You- Barry Louis Polisar
Eve, The Apple of my Eye- Bell X1
Both Sides of the Gun- Ben Harper
    Juicy- Better Than Ezra
    Aphrodisiac- Bow Wow Wow
Exit Music (for a Film)- Radiohead
The Ballad of Grim and Lily- Bree Sharp
Irgendwo Auf Der Welt- Comedian Harmonists (I don’t speak German, but just the music is very… amazing. Totally amazing. The lyrics when translated are pretty beautiful too.)
The Culling of the Fold- The Decemberists
    The Infanta- The Decemberists
    The Bagman’s Gambit- The Decemberists
    Sleep to Dream- Fiona Apple
Someone to Love- Fountains of Wayne
    Matinée- Franz Ferdinand
The Way I Am- Ingrid Michaelson
    Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley
    Read My Mind- The Killers
When You Were Young- The Killers
    I Like Giants- Kimya Dawson
    Tree Hugger- Kimya Dawson
Throw Me a Rope- KT Tunstall
    Take This Waltz- Leonard Cohen
    Baila Morena- Zucchero featuring Mana
    Uno- Muse
Welcome to the Black Parade- My Chemical Romance
    Ophelia- Natalie Merchant
Wuthering heights- Pat Benatar (cover of the Kate Bush song)
    Aspettami- Pink Martini
    Sway- Rosemary Clooney
    Building A Mystery- Sarah McLachlan
    Caramel- Suzanne Vega
    Delta Dawn- Tanya Tucker
    Leather- Tori Amos
    Rinse- Vanessa Carlton
    The Tower- Vienna Teng
    C’mon C’mon- The Von Bondies
    One Headlight- The Wallflowers

So, um, it’s a huge list, but I figured it was better to overrecommend than underrecommend. And I can hook you up with MP3s for most of these if you would like them. 😉

One thing I think you should keep in mind is how creepy songs can be mind based on the context. For example, there was a song used in an episode of The X-Files (“Home”) called “Wonderful, Wonderful” by Johnny Mathis. The episode completely ruined it for me forever, because it is so deeply associated with the theme of the episode. So if you can somehow link, like Polly Wolly Doodle or something to something sinster and vampirey, it’s kind of awesome. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Hee. Posting again to show off my new fannish icon.

Because a post should have some purpose, I suppose:
    I Am Kloot?
    My Chemical Romance?
    The Faint?

  15. kaeleighjustice

    Thanks!

Oh I have lots of books to chose from on my WANT list so I’m very excited about the gift card. Thanks so much. There are some great songs on those lists! And even a few I’m going to have to try out.

Those two songs are so beautiful, I love them.

I posted this yesterday but I accidentally deleted the post while I was doing an edit. lol

Anyway, I’m a big classical music fan. Sergei Prokofiev is my favorite composer. I don’t suppose you have any characters that love classical music, do you?

Scherzo: Vivacissimo (by Prokofiev), played by Hilary Hahn
    http://www.youtube.com/v/1c0qX42c16I&hl=en

Dance of the Knights, from Romeo & Juliet, Sergei Prokofiev
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLv8tswamRs

Der Erlkönig (Schubert), performed by Hilary Hahn
    http://www.youtube.com/v/0g0QjwGkIEA&hl=en

I’m also a Linkin Park fan. All of their music reminds me of vampires. Click here for more Linkin Park.

Lying From You, by Linkin Park

I’m not really sure all the songs that have been mentioned, but for songs that remind me of Vampires:

Pretty much anything and everything by Evanescense. They have a GREAT sound for anything vampire and “My Immortal” just totally fits, right?
Also, “This is for Keeps” by The Spill Canvas.
I’m pretty sure that’s the title..it’s about vampires.

–You should check out Vampire Beach Babes just in general; they’re a surf/goth/pop group that never fails to amuse me. Some of their stuff also deals with monsters and aliens, but I know “Tomb Mau Mau” at least is vampire-related. 🙂

–My Chemical Romance, “Vampires Will Never Hurt You” (“you must keep your soul like a secret in your throat” and “we’ll shoot back holy water like cheap whiskey” are some of my favorite lines) and “Blood.” A lot of My Chem’s stuff would work on a vampire playlist, honestly, but I’ll leave it at these two.

–Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers, “Monster Mash” 🙂
–Ludo, “The Horror Of Our Love”
    –Guster, “What You Wish For”
–Jimi Hendrix, “Burning Of The Midnight Lamp”
    –The Eagles, “Witchy Woman”
    –The Rolling Stones, “Midnight Rambler”
–Shivaree, “Goodnight Moon” (if you can find the live version, it’s even eerier; just ask me if you can’t)
    –Laura Viers, “Icebound Stream”

How’s that for a random mix of genres. Hope you find something you like in there! 🙂

  25. nuit_belle

    Finally, The Frames
(Did you fall, when you ran? It’s a long way down. Welcome back, to your place. Hope you know it now.)

    Gorecki, Lamb
(Could we say right here til the end of time, til the Earth stops burning? Want to love you til the seas run dry. I’ve found the one I’ve waited for.)

Song Beneath the Song, Maria Taylor
    (It’s not a love song.)

    Tripping, Robbie Williams
(First they ignore you. Then laugh at you and hate you. Then they fight you. Then you win. When the truth dies, very bad things happen. They’re being heartless again.)
