Cover reveal for A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU. Behold the glory! Also, a contest —

Posted on May 19, 2014

I’ve been teasing you guys with bits and pieces of info about A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU, but until last week we didn’t have a final cover. But now we have one! Do you want to see it? You do. You really, really do.

BEHOLD THE GLORY

the cover for A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU

Isn’t it amazing? This design surpassed my wildest dreams. Very soon, Epic Reads will post an interview with both me and designer, explaining a little bit about how this cover came into being. When that day comes, I’ll link the post here. But for now, let us just look at it. LOOK AT IT.

And the synopsis, for those of you who might not have seen it before:

Cloud Atlas meets Orphan Black in this epic, dimension-bending trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray about a girl who must chase her father’s killer through multiple dimensions. A Thousand Pieces of You explores an amazingly intricate multiverse where fate is unavoidable, the truth elusive, and love the greatest mystery of all.

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their groundbreaking achievements. Their most astonishing invention, called the Firebird, allows users to jump into multiple universes—and promises to revolutionize science forever. But then Marguerite’s father is murdered, and the killer—her parents’ handsome, enigmatic assistant, Paul— escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

Marguerite refuses to let the man who destroyed her family go free. So she races after Paul through different universes, always leaping into another version of herself. But she also meets alternate versions of the people she knows—including Paul, whose life entangles with hers in increasingly familiar ways. Before long she begins to question Paul’s guilt—as well as her own heart. And soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is far more sinister than she expected.

I’m going to have lots more reveals — about swag, my super-sekrit Firebird trilogy board on Pinterest (soon to be made public, with hints and spoilers lurking in the images) and much, much more. But for now, a contest!

Tell me what YOU think about the cover image — what it means, what you like, even what you don’t (if applicable). You can tell me lots of ways: Post a comment on the ATPOY entry at GoodReads, tweet about it (tagging me, of course), posting the image on Pinterest with your thoughts (it’s on my “inspiring images” board for now) or just commenting on my pin of the image, or just say hello in the comments right here. I’d love to hear from you! (I’ll be sure to check every single venue to get all the entries, but if you’re at all worried about me seeing them, feel free to post links in comments to this post. If you muse on more than one venue, you are entered more than one time.)

Do this before Monday, June 2, and you will be entered to win a prize pack of five (count ’em, FIVE) YA books. The grand prize winner will win REBEL BELLE by Rachel Hawkins; PERFECT LIES by Kiersten White; THE WINNER’S CURSE by Marie Rutkowski; an autographed copy of BORN WICKED by Jessica Spot5swood; and an autographed copy of LEGEND by Marie Lu! Since the Epic Reads interviews will probably be posted before June 1, I’m not giving the prize to the guesser who comes closest; the winner will be chosen at random.

One caveat: I normally make all contests open to anyone around the world. However, postage rates are KILLING ME. So I can’t offer the five-book prize package to anyone outside the US. So sorry — but I’m not closing the contest to you! If you’re outside the US and I pick you as the winner, you will instead win a $30 gift certificate to the online bookstore of your choice. The prize pack will then be offered for another contest, another day. I want everybody to have a chance for some kind of goodies.

And remember: A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU comes out Nov. 4 in the USA, and a few international releases are already set with others soon to come.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts…

I ADORE your cover! The modern gray vs. the colorful (I think Mediterranean?) buildings is breathtaking! Plus the watercolor look on the top and bottom is so pretty! It’s just totally perfect! I could seriously stare at this cover for hours, discovering all of it’s little details.

    • claudia

So glad you like! I feel like I could gaze into it for hours too.

    • claudia

It’s my favorite cover too! So happy you’re looking forward to it.

  2. Bridget Howard

This cover is so stunning!!! I love how there is the modern day buildings on top and the back in time images reflected in the water!!! I seriously loved this cover so much that I went ahead and pre-ordered a copy because I knew it had to sit on my shelf in all its prettyness!!! Can’t wait for November!!!!

  3. kari j

I love this cover almost as much as I am sure to love this book! Thank you for this!

  4. Petra

The cover is gorgeous. Definitely one of my favourites. I love the watercolours. In my mind it fits since you “blend” watercolours and the story involves multiple universes. I love the images and how the top and bottom contrast each other. The top is modern with famous skyscrapers. I recognize the Gherkin, Shanghai World Finace Center and Jin Mao Tower. And the bottom with different historical buildings. The Saint Basil’s Cathedral is the obvious one and I think I recognize St Paul’s Cathedral. I’d love to know who designed it. It would be an amazing print.

If the synopsis hadn’t pulled me in, the cover would of because I’d want to find out how the cover fits the story. Really enjoyed the excerpt and can’t wait to read it. Already pre-ordered it and am counting down the days 🙂

    • claudia

Oooh, you know your architecture! (Possibly TOO well – not sure those skyscrapers are meant to be that recognizable – but we can roll with it.) Epic Reads will be revealing the designer soon, and I plan to make some posters for events. 😀

And THANK YOU for the countdown widget! I need to post that soon…

  5. Mia

This cover looks awesome! cant wait to read it! Have a feeling I’m going to love it.

  6. Maryanne Fantalis

I love it! I love the way the reflected worlds draw you in. And the OCD part of me loves how the H and the N line up so perfectly with their letters and the A is suggested in its building. Oh, art. (The blurb is killer, too, BTW!) Can’t wait to read this book!

    • claudia

Oh, how cool with the letters – I hadn’t consciously recognized that before! So glad you’re looking forward to it. 🙂

  7. Maryanne Fantalis

…buildings. I meant that the H and the N line up with their respective buildings… and the shape of the A and the top of the building above it… *sigh* It’s early, and it took me about three times to get this thing to post…

    • claudia

Thank you! I’m just glad other people think it’s lovely too, otherwise I’d be like, “Why are you in love with a book cover? You need to get out more.”

  8. Adrianna

I can’t wait until it comes out. The cover reminds me of the show the 10th kingdom. I also have to say I love the color’s on the bottom. It just makes it pop. The cover alone made me want to read this book alone.

    • claudia

Aren’t the colors gorgeous! I hope you’ll like the book as much as the cover.

      (And ooooh, The Tenth Kingdom.)

  9. Helena Reviews

Oh My God! This cover is AMAZING! I can not express how gorgeous it is. From the graphics to the colors. Its definitely perfection and its a must have. Congratulations! xo

    • claudia

Thanks for the multi platform love! And I agree about the gorgeous coloring.

  10. Kat

WOW! The cover is amazing! I love splatters and how it’s set up like a reflection in water. The colors are beautiful as well! Can’t wait for this to be released!

    • claudia

So glad you like the reflections – I adore that part too. And happy you’re looking forward to A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU!

  11. Anne Vickery

Eye catching. The whole idea of the two different cities in reflection is brilliant and it will grab everyone’s attention on shelves. A lot of people like me are visual and and an awesome cover is a guarantee to get their attention then once they have picked it up they won’t want to put it done. Well done to the artist who is brilliant and your story is the clincher its a WINNER.

    • claudia

I hope you’re right, Anne! The artist truly is brilliant; hope to have her name soon to share.

  12. shannon

Hi Claudia, Congratulations on the book and its glorious cover. I’m looking forward to reading it!

By the way, I took your workshop on planning/outlining at Wordstock in Portland last year. The information was immensely helpful. I return to those notes frequently. Thank you!

    • claudia

So glad you’re looking forward to A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU — and yay, I’m thrilled the outlining workshop was useful!

  13. Camila G.

I’m loving the cover! it kind of reminds me of a really cool coin. Two sides equally alluring, yet so different. The colors are very interesting as well, one very colorful and the other one grayish.(hehe)but what called my attention the most is that the colorful part has texture while the other is plainer.
I also like how the tittle works so well with the cover, a “thousand” elements that work beautifully! I’m really excited about this new book!! Congratulations and best of luck on this new adventure! (love you)

    • claudia

Isn’t the texture great? I love that part too. Thanks for entering, and I hope you will enjoy the series!

    • claudia

Thank you so much! Thrilled you’re looking forward to both book and cover. 😀

  14. Tenisha

Wow this cover is spectacularly gorgeous! (Is spectacularly actually a word? Haha)
It is so different to any other covers that are out right now and I believe it will draw in a lot of new readers!
The story sounds like it will be amazing and I cannot wait to read!!!

    • claudia

Spectacularly is a real word! At least, it is from now on. So glad you are looking forward to it, Tenisha!

  15. jello dela cruz

Yey! Can’t wait to read your book! Sounds interesting and unique 🙂

  16. Kyra Lee

The cover is gorgeous. The synopsis is even more gorgeous. I’m super excited for this book. Gosh, you had me at Cloud Atlas meets Orphan Black. I’m obsessed with Orphan Black so I know I’ll be obsessed with this book. Only if Marguerite isn’t a curly-haired blonde, Ukrainian in one dimension (just kidding). I definitely feel the top half of the cover represents the science world she’s coming from and the bottom half represents the journey she’s about to go on around the world. I kind of feel it’ll be a little like the amazing race (which I also love). Hopefully we’ll get to see different parts of the world as we go. Gah, I’m so excited.

    • claudia

So, so thrilled that you’re looking forward to it. And yay, another member of Clone Club! Marguerite does have curly hair … but she’s never blonde or from the Ukraine, so I think we’re safe from the Helena zone.

Never thought of the Amazing Race comparison before, but you’re right — and you WILL see many parts of the world as we go. 😀 Thanks for the cover love!

  17. Samantha Wallace

I love the cover but you have always had wonderful covers for your books!! Thanks for the giveaway!! 🙂

  18. Jaime G.

What a beautiful cover! This is, without a doubt, a book that I would pick up at any bookstore any day, even if I didn’t already know who you were as an author. I can’t wait until it’s released!!

    • claudia

That’s definitely encouraging! Hang on – we’ll count it all down until November 4!

  19. Carol M.

It’s a lovely cover, and it’s nice when a title and cover reflect one another so well.

    • claudia

Thanks so much! I really feel like the design team outdid themselves.

  20. Annika

I adore that magenta/purple watercolor —really catches the eye! And the simple white font is a great balance.

    • claudia

Thank you! I love the watercolor effect too. And the typeface just adds something, doesn’t it? I liked the painting/art on its own, but when the title was added it worked some kind of magic.

  21. Andrea Higgins

What a beautiful cover. It reminds me of looking at watercolor exhibits in New York City museums. You could frame it!

    • claudia

So glad you like! I hope to get some posters made so that you guys COULD frame it if you wanted to. 😀

  22. Jimena Cuello

Hi Claudia! This awsome, this cover of your new book is one of my favourites right now, the sinopsis is really interesting i can’t wait to order this, and i want to know how the inspiration became to you and your designer, it’s a beginin and you should know that the bookmark has arrived home, and Spellcaster too. Thank you for this and i wish the best to your book.

    • claudia

Yay for the bookmark, and for SPELLCASTER, and your love for the cover! Epic Reads will be running an interview with me and the designer in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully we’ll all learn where the inspiration comes from then. 😀

  23. Rachelle

So I need this, like now. 🙂

My absolute favorite colors are blue and dark purple. This cover is a sign that this book must be in my hands. Plus, everyone needs a good Sci-Fi book in their life. Oh, not to mention that it’s got the name Claudia Gray on the cover. 😉

    • claudia

Yes, I sense that the book longs to be in your hands ASAP. 😀

  24. Cel

I like the cover. It makes me thing about two different worlds: one which is serious and the other which is funnier.

PS: I’m from Spain and maybe I’ve made some mistakes in my spelling or grammar, I’m sorry ^^’

    • claudia

Your English is fine! I don’t know that any of the worlds are funny, per se, but Marguerite certainly has more fun in some of them than she does in others …

Glad you’re looking forward to this!

  25. Kaja

Umm, I love it. It has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing covers I’ve seen this year. It’s definitely one of those I’d buy based on cover alone – though the description certainly sounds intriguing as well! Complicated revenge stories are always fun to read …

    • claudia

Yay, I’m so glad you love the cover as much as I do! Hope you will enjoy the story too.

  26. Cindy C.

What I really like about this cover is the contrast in color, as for the above color is dark and it looks serious and the bottoms is bright and it kind of has a happier tone to it, so perhaps this novel will have both themes: serious and happy. That’s the first thing that caught my eye. Also, the contrast in places, one looks modern and the other kind of looks like the past. I don’t know if I’m right, but either way I love it!! The cover is really awesome! 🙂

Thank you so much for this giveaway! 🙂

  27. Andrea

I absolutely love the cover! There are few things that I love more than old places, skylines, and bright, happy colors. What’s better than having all three in one place? I also love the difference between the dark grey and the happy purple-y pink. (Did I mention that purple is my favorite color?) I read someone else’s thoughts about it seeming like it was reflected in water, but to me it looks more like the purple is some kind of paint splotch. (Another thing I love for no real reason!) Honestly, this cover is absolutely full of the things I love most. It’s one of the most beautiful covers I’ve seen in a long time. Everyone says not to judge a book by its cover, but how could I not read it when the cover is so gorgeous?

    • claudia

I, too, deeply love purple. 😀 And you might be on to something with the paint splotch, btw. Glad you’re looking forward to it!

  28. Emma

I think it is a beautiful, with a great balance of colors and pattern. I might not have been willing to give this book a chance because I thought her other series was just okay, but the cover has swayed my decision.

    • claudia

Well, “her” is me, but I’m glad you’re giving the book a chance. I think you’ll enjoy it. 🙂

  29. Maggie C

I love the cover so much. It’s so well done and pretty. If I had to guess bwhat it means I’d have to say it’s something to do with the different dimensions. Maybe how one place can be totally different in another dimension? Or something like places are not always as they seem. Anyway thanks for the awesome giveaway 🙂

    • claudia

Thank you so much! I think your guess about the different dimensions is pretty solid. 😀

  30. Ellen

I really like the cover. It is very eye catching. At first glance it’s like looking at a reflection. Then you begin to study it closer and you wonder what the gray modern buildings contrasted against the colorful, exotic other skyline. The cover makes you wonder what the two worlds have in common.

    • claudia

So glad you like it! Wondering what the two worlds have in common – you have pretty much hit on a Very Important Theme –

    • claudia

Then mark Nov. 4 on your calendar, or put it in your phone! Seems like a long time away, but A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU will be here before we know it …

  31. Matt Keenan

As a reader, I am very VERY persuaded by COVERS! If the cover doesn’t pop, I’ll most likely skip over the book. BUT THIS COVER. DANG. I immediately wanted to go BUY IT when I first saw it! And then the synopsis made me drool. NEED THIS BOOK! I can’t wait to get my hands on it someday! I haven’t read your other books, but now I’m excited to try them out! CONGRATS ON THE COVER!!!

    • claudia

May the cover lust you feel be shared by many. 😀 And I hope you will enjoy A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU!

    • claudia

Oh, thank you so much for all the entries and all the book love!

  32. Melanie

As an architect student this cover is just epic to me! love the concept of the it and the colors omg just gorgeous, my personal favorites 🙂
Can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

    • claudia

It has the gold star from an architect-to-be! No higher praise. 😀

  33. Emily

This is one of the best covers I’ve seen in ages. Even if I knew nothing about the book, I’d be foaming at the mouth to read it based on the cover alone. Everything about it pops – color contrast, typography, even the TEXTURING. It’s got the whole package 😀

    • claudia

Thanks so much! Of course I adore the whole thing, but I’m especially glad that you like that texturing – it’s one of my favorite aspects too.

  34. Ellen

This cover is absolutely astounding. I love how it reflects the description of the story with the two skyscapes representing the different universes. The top seems more reserved and dull, probably making it

    • Ellen

our boring world while the bottom is more vibrant and unreal looking. My favorite part is probably how the watercolors bleed out onto the page, and how especially on the bottom, you can see the watercolor-paper texture.
(I have no idea why it submitted my first half of my comment already but whatever)

      • claudia

Hey, two comments are even better than one. Glad you like the contrast between the two worlds! 🙂

  35. Bhavik

This cover is absolutely stunning. Seriously it makes me want to buy it just to look at it. If the story is as good as the cover then I’m sure I’ll love the book. 🙂

    • Bhavik

Okay, so I just read the description on goodreads and it sounds SO COOL WOW. I added it to my to be read shelf because I am so intrigued right now.

      • claudia

Thrilled that you feel like the synopsis lives up to the cover. I hope you like the book itself, too! 😀

  36. Silvia Chan

Thank You! I really like the cover and the two cities thing. Again, thank you very much.

  37. Sarah Kalaitzidis

I have to say the use of water color mixed with an photoshopped image looks amazing. It just unique and eye catching. It really does make me want to pick up this book and read it.

    • claudia

That was definitely the goal! Glad you like it. 🙂

  38. Lauren

This cover is total eye candy! There’s many things I love about it, but the one thing I love the most is the fact that it’s so unique. It stands out and makes a statement. If I was walking through B&N and saw it, I’d have to stop and check it out. I’ve been seduced by many a pretty covers in the past, and this one is no exception.

    • claudia

I totally agree about the uniqueness being the best thing about it. There are so many gorgeous YA covers these days that it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. Glad you feel that it does!

  39. Daenielle

Gorgeous cover. It immediately gives you an idea on what the book is about that keeps me thinking what story behind it.

  40. Anna S.

Oh, wow – this is, without a doubt, my favorite cover that I’ve seen in a very long time. It would absolutely be a candidate for being a “cover buy” … except the summary is even more appealing than the cover, if possible! (To be perfectly honest, I was hooked as soon as I saw the words “multiple dimensions”) I’m ashamed to admit that I (for some unknown reason) haven’t yet read any of your books, but I’m so excited about ATPOY that I will undoubtedly be preordering this, and I’m going to read all of your other books very soon! Cover-wise, I *really* love the juxtaposition of the universes – in particular, the way that they subtly overlap in middle of the page seems like it could have some intriguing story-related implications. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but the colors seem like they could also have implications – for example, the monotone hue of the top and the vibrancy of the bottom. The recognizable architecture is also fantastic – St. Basil’s Cathedral being the most recognizable… ancient vs. modern? Are the universes contemporaries? Alternate Russia? I have no idea, but this speculation’s making me very excited to look at the book. Also, I LOVE the watercolor aspect of the cover… to me, the fact that the two universes seem to be “painted” on the page is extremely thought-provoking – could the universes be altered as easily as the strokes of a paintbrush can? Is it arbitrary? Are they real? What’s the canvas? Hmm… now I feel extremely philosophical.
To wrap up these philosophical musings, it’s absolutely breathtakingly stunning, beautiful, gorgeous cover. I absolutely cannot wait until November. Thank you for bringing this story to us all! I already know that it will be spectacular.

    • claudia

This is such an amazing response! Although I’m happy you love the cover, it’s even better to hear you’re looking forward to what’s inside. 🙂 You have picked up on many interesting clues in the image, for sure…

  41. Haley S.

I love the cover! I love the contrast between the two different universes; it looks amazing! The colors are beautiful too.

  42. Crissie

Okay, I may be too late for the contest because it does say BEFORE Monday June 2 and today is Monday June 2 though, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I hadn’t heard of this book until recently. I was looking through a list of 2014 releases and this cover caught my eye because, well, it is GORGEOUS. Then I read the synopsis and now it is one of my most anticipated releases. I LOVE the water painting feel to the cover. When I first saw it I didn’t even realize it was 2 city skylines. I also love the contradicting reflections thing. I just- I just can’t wait! =) (I hope I’m not too late for the contest, but either way I’m excited!)

P.S. I put my blog in the website thing, but I’m also on youtube : http://www.youtube.com/ctwood09

    • claudia

Oh, I should’ve specified – for me that always sort of means “before end of day.” That’s my corporate past coming back to haunt my writer present.

Thrilled that you love the cover and are looking forward to A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU!

  43. Kerry O'Dea

I absolutely love the cover! It’s like a mirror image, but with two different outcomes of the same city. Very unique! <3

  44. Kierra

I seriously love everything about this cover. I love the beautiful colors and especially how it’s similar to a watercolor painting. I love how it illustrates the books summary so well(that seems to be happening less and less in the past few years).
I can’t wait to read this! Thank you for the generous giveaway! 🙂

    • claudia

Yes! Cover and content are related! Victory!

And so, so glad you like the look of it and are looking forward to A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU. 😀

  45. Cindy Do

Amazing book cover Claudia! I love the colors and overall the cover is very attracting. I can’t wait to read this book! Thanks for the giveaway 😀

    • claudia

Aren’t the colors gorgeous? I hope you guys will like the content of A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU as much as the cover. 🙂

  46. Noemi

I totally love this cover, it’s just WOW, can’t describe it cause it’s perfect, hope to have it in Ecuador.

    • claudia

Thanks! I hope to have news about a Spanish translation soon.

  47. Nadia

I know I may be late but I totally love this book. I adored every single page, I cried, smiled, screamed and even forgot to breathe. The cover is amazing and I want to print it on canvas and hang it in my living room. Honestly, I want to do that, can I order such a print somewhere? I would be so thankful for any help <3
